Notes: | Fresedo noted on the sheet that this Tango was “based on folk airs”, as it is obviously based on the popular Mexican song Cielito lindo. The song Cielito Lindo was registered in Mexico in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza. Historians agree that the melody was older than the registered song, and there are indications that both the lyrics and the music came from Spain more than 100 years before Mendoza's version. Almost forty years later in Buenos Aires, Osvaldo Fresedo registered a tango called Cielito Mío, which clearly used the same melody. The newspaper Crítica published a scathing article in early 1921 attacking the idea of transposing “foreign” music to the tango rhythm. But it was too late. By then, both Francisco García Jiménez and Emilio Fresedo had written lyrics to accompany Osvaldo Fresedo's tango, which had already become popular. Gardel recorded it that same year with Emilio's lyrics. In August of that year, director José López Silva used it in a play of the same name, to which García Jiménez responded with a scathing public letter, also in the newspaper Crítica. A few days later, Emilio Fresedo responded harshly to his detractors in the same newspaper. When Osvaldo Fresedo arrived in Paris in November 1928, the impresario Volterra pointed out to him that the tango Cielito Mío had also been very popular in Paris. |
